Lucca Comics 2026: the masterwork acquisition and signing guide

Navigating the cobblestones with masterwork hardcovers
Every autumn, our quiet medieval city transforms into one of the world’s most intense festivals of graphic literature and card & table-top games celebration. Standing in line inside a 500-year-old Tuscan pavilion waiting for a creator's signature is an unforgettable experience, but carrying high-end hardcovers through a crowd in potentially rainy October weather is a recipe for crushed corners and ruined paper blocks.

As someone who lives and runs a vault here in Lucca, I see collectors make the same mistake every year: hauling 5-kilo omnibuses through rain-soaked streets, only to end up with dented board edges and smudged ink. Getting a legendary volume signed requires a strategy built for physical preservation.

The ergonomics of signature hunting: picking the right format
Before packing your messenger bag, consider the weight-to-art ratio of the books you want signed:

  • Skip the 1.000-page monsters: Leave 5-kilo omnibus editions in your Airbnb or on your shelf. Carrying massive page blocks all day strains the spine signatures and increases the risk of dropping the book on wet cobblestones.

  • Target single-volume deluxe hardcovers: Oversized Deluxe Editions (like Batman: Ego Deluxe or Daytripper Deluxe) offer expansive 180-degree lay-flat title pages for signatures and remarques without breaking your back.

  • Prioritize frontispiece & endpaper stock: Ensure the edition you select features uncoated, high-opacity endpapers. High-gloss paper takes up to five minutes for archival ink or paint pens to dry, leaving fresh signatures vulnerable to smudging when the book is closed in a rush.

Three rules for protecting convention acquisitions in transit
Rain and crowded pavilions are brutal on pristine paper. Protect your investment before you walk into the city walls:

  1. Double-sleeve in acid-free polypropylene: Never carry an un-bagged hardcover in a backpack. Wrap each volume in a 2-mil acid-free poly sleeve with a backing board to shield against moisture and accidental friction against zippers.

  2. Use rigid corner protectors for maximum security: Slip temporary high-density foam or cardboard corner caps onto your hardcovers before putting them into your bag. One bump against a wooden booth display will crush an un-shielded board corner instantly.

  3. Allow ink curing time: When a creator signs your book, do not close the cover immediately. Give pigment liners at least 60 seconds and liquid ink/metallic paint pens 3 full minutes to air-dry completely before laying the endpaper back down.

I hope to see you and your curation there. I already know what I'll be (securely) bringing.
