Creator Dossier

Taiyo Matsumoto is a multiple Eisner Award-winning Japanese manga creator, widely revered for his highly idiosyncratic, surreal, and deeply expressive visual style. Straying from traditional mainstream manga aesthetics, Matsumoto's artwork is heavily influenced by European bande dessinée—utilizing loose, sketch-like linework, kinetic layouts, and unconventional perspectives. He is best known for his critically acclaimed masterpieces Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong, and the poignant, semi-autobiographical drama Sunny. For Cats of the Louvre—a prestige graphic novel officially commissioned by the Musée du Louvre in Paris—Matsumoto weaves a haunting, dreamlike fable about the secret feline inhabitants of the world-famous museum and the profound, almost supernatural connection between the artwork and the observer.
